Holiday Eggnog

Come December 1st, it was pretty much a given: you would find some type of eggnog in our house. Nick loved eggnog, whether it was straight from the carton or homemade and spiked. In fact, Santa was a very lucky man! We served  Santa delicious spiked eggnog to go with his cookies. Santa always left crumbs so that Kristin and Patrick would have no doubts he had been there, but he never left a drop of his eggnog. Eggnog and cookies became our own memorable tradition.

                                                                  adapted from
                                                       Martha Stewart Cookbook

Ingredients
24 eggs, separated
2 cups sugar
2 quarts whole milk
2 cups bourbon
1 cup Cognac
2 quarts heavy cream
Freshly grated nutmeg

Directions
Beat the egg yolks together with the sugar until the mixture is thick and creamy. Add the whole milk, the bourbon,  and the Cognac. Stir well.

Just before serving, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Whip the egg whites to a similar consistency and fold both the cream and the egg whites into the egg yolk mixture. Pour the eggnog into a very large bowl,  sprinkle a grating of fresh nutmeg on top, and serve.
Optional: enhance with holiday garnish.
